NRA FIRST Steps Shotgun Orientation

Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training — is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers.

NRA FIRST Steps Shotgun course is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific shotgun model. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific model shotgun at a moving target. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular shotgun model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the shotgun; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.

NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

Short Description:

Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe and proper of a shotgun shooting a moving target.

This course is at least ten-hours long and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns at moving targets. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components; shotgun shell malfunctions; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Shotgun Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a course completion certificate.

NRA Instructor Shotgun Shooting Course

Short Description:

This 17-hour course teaches the knowledge, skills and attitude essential to organizing, promoting and teaching NRA’s Basic Shotgun Shooting Course.

Prerequisite: Possession of basic firearm safety and shooting skills is a perquisite for certification as an NRA instructor. Prior to the instructor training, candidates complete a pre-course questionnaire and demonstrate their firearm background in pre-course assessment exercises.

Description: Course is presented in two parts: basic instructor training, and discipline specific instructor training. Students demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course, and complete an instructor certification examination. Students will receive the NRA Trainer’s Guide, NRA Shotgun Instructor Candidate Packet, and NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course student packet.

  • Course price:  $275.00 + $25 for the BIT class discussed below if needed.
  • The BIT (Basic Instructor Training) course is also a prerequisite for the Instructor Course. I only charge for the cost of the book for this course: $25.00
  • The NRA requires FOUR students minimum to certify this class. I keep students on a waiting list and will contact all participants when I have the required FOUR students.
  • To get on the waiting list for this Instructor class, register now. This will guarantee your seat in the class. To register you must make your non-refundable payment in full. You can call me with your credit card number, and I will get you set up for the class. Amount required is:  $300.00 ($275 if your BIT class is current.)
  • Bring to Class: Shotgun you intend to use; 100 rounds of #8 ammunition; a box of clay pigeons; hearing and eye protection.
